Modest sized second home project in a newly created golf community near Sonora, California. Three bedrooms, two baths and a open-planned living, dining, and kitchen area under a broad gable roof for roughly 1,800 sqft. of livable area. The living, dining, and kitchen look out the glazed gabled north end towards the golf course and distant views beyond.
The spaces open onto a flagstone patio, inviting relaxed lounging and dining as suited to the occasion.
The design for the residence is by Architect Aaron Green, FAIA, and prepared pro bono on behalf of his friends. My responsibility was to develop the design drawings from his sketches as well as create the two view perspectives. Architectural design guidelines accompanied the CC&Rs for the development, requiring that residences conform to one of a list of historical styles, none of which were contemporary. This simple design was as far as Aaron would go towards acquiescing to any favored historical style. The Design Review Committee concluded that the design was too contemporary—it was rejected. The client elected to sell the property rather than build where a design by Aaron Green was not acceptable.
